|About: Dennis Maurice Dumpson|
Born & raised in South Philadelphia, Pa. by a single-mother, Dennis Maurice Dumpson has used all that he has learned and experienced to cultivate who he is today. He is an author, Founder of The RAHA Project, educator, trained marketer & publicist, expert communicator, motivational and public speaker, and an advocate for youth among so many other titles.
A proud alumnus of the First Historically Black College or University in the world, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, Dennis studied Philosophy & Psychology and minored in English. After graduating, Dennis started his career in concert and event production with the City of Philadelphia's Welcome America celebration—as the production manager for two of their concerts. After more than five years in event production and event marketing he felt called to work toward a more mission driven career path. He began serving as the public speaking/life skills instructor with the Community College of Philadelphia's TRIO Upward Bound Program. For three years he taught and cultivated the minds of some of Philadelphia's brightest youth. Dennis believes that one of his personal missions' is to empower youth, especially youth from under served backgrounds, and be an advocate on their behalf. Simultaneously, he also worked in cause marketing and advancement communications in the Greater Philadelphia area, where he developed and managed Social Media, Publications, and Public Relations strategies for non-profit organizations.
In 2008, Dennis released his first book, What My Colored Eyes See: The Words of a Decorated Child, this led him to start an initiative to share the importance of writing and finding one’s authentic and personal voice with students (similar to what he had done at Community College of Philadelphia) in Philadelphia high schools.
“Words changed my life; I often think about the power that one word can hold--whether good or bad, words can be life changing. When I was only 16 years old, a teacher told me I was smart and special and I had never been told that before by any of my teachers. Those two words—smart and special—changed something inside of me and it rejuvenated and built my spirit and passion for life and education. That power and influence is part of the inheritance that is owed to all of our youth, from all backgrounds, but especially the marginalized, impoverished, and under served.”
